Three Bells of Fira
A blue-domed church with a bell wall on the caldera path towards Firostefani, one of the island's best-known views.
Santorini is a tender port: ships anchor in the flooded volcanic caldera and small boats bring you to the old port below Fira, 220 metres under the clifftop town. Getting up and down the cliff is the part to plan for, so build in time for queues.
Which port are you visiting?
Take the cable car up to Fira (about 3 minutes plus the queue) or climb the stepped path (allow 30–45 minutes, steep and uneven). Boats to the volcano (Nea Kameni) leave from this harbour, so that trip needs no climb.
Tender portAthinios portSome ships land tours here by tender; coaches and taxis climb a steep hairpin road to Fira (about 20–30 minutes). Little to see at the port itself.

The cliff-edge walkway at the top of the cable car, lined with cafés and terraces looking straight down into the caldera.
The large white cathedral in the centre of Fira, with painted interiors and a courtyard near the caldera edge.
A small museum near the cable car with sculpture and pottery from the island's ancient cities. Closed on Mondays.
Finds from the Bronze Age town buried by the great eruption, including wall paintings and pottery from Akrotiri. Closed on Tuesdays.
The hub for local buses to Oia, Akrotiri, Kamari, Perissa and Pyrgos. No official tourist office could be confirmed in Fira; timetables are posted at the station.
A winery on the caldera rim near Pyrgos offering tastings of local wines with views over the bay.
A hilltop village of lanes winding up to the ruins of a Venetian castle, with views across the whole island.
Boat trips from Fira's old port land you on the young volcanic island in the caldera for a walk up to the craters; some add the warm springs at Palea Kameni. Because boats leave from the old port, there is no cable car climb.
A long black-sand beach on the east coast with a promenade of cafés. The sand gets very hot in summer.
A rocky headland that once held a medieval castle, reached by the caldera-edge path from Fira (about 45 minutes' walk each way) or a short taxi to Imerovigli. The final scramble is steep.
The village at the island's northern tip, famous for its white houses, blue domes and caldera views. Buses and taxis from Fira take around 30 minutes; roads and lanes get very crowded.
A Bronze Age town preserved under volcanic ash, now under a large protective roof with walkways through the streets.
Ruins of the island's ancient city on a high ridge above Kamari, reached by a steep winding road and a walk up. Closed on Wednesdays.
