Hours Ashore

Your hours ashore in Venice

A city of canals, bridges and lagoon islands, with St Mark's Square and the Grand Canal at its heart. Most cruise ships now berth on the mainland side of the lagoon, so getting into the old city takes longer than it used to.

Good to know

Where ships dock

Marittima cruise terminals (old city, ships up to 25,000 GT)

Take the People Mover (about 3 minutes, runs roughly every 8 minutes from 7am to 11pm) from opposite the port entrance to Piazzale Roma, or walk there in about 15 minutes. From Piazzale Roma, vaporetto line 1 or 2 runs down the Grand Canal to St Mark's (roughly 30 to 45 minutes), or walk about 40 minutes through the lanes. Water taxis wait at the terminals.

San Basilio terminal (old city, small ships)

On the Dorsoduro waterfront. Walk east along the Zattere promenade to St Mark's in about 30 to 35 minutes (crossing the Accademia bridge), or walk about 10 minutes to the Zattere stop for a vaporetto along the Giudecca Canal.

Porto Marghera, Lombardia and Liguria quays (larger ships)

These quays are inside the working industrial port on the mainland, so you cannot walk out. Cruise lines run coaches to the Marittima / Piazzale Roma area (allow about 20 to 30 minutes), then continue by vaporetto or on foot as from Marittima. Allow 60 to 75 minutes each way between the ship and St Mark's. Check your cruise line's shuttle times and price.

Fusina cruise terminal (mainland, ships up to 250 m)

Most passengers use their cruise line's transfer. Independently, the Fusina to Zattere ferry run by Terminal Fusina crosses the lagoon in about 25 to 30 minutes, every day of the year, from the Terminal Fusina dock about 1 km from the cruise terminal (ask staff whether you can walk it or take a taxi). From Zattere, walk about 20 to 25 minutes to St Mark's or take vaporetto line 2. Allow at least an hour each way.

Chioggia, Isola dei Saloni

Chioggia's own old town, a small lagoon fishing town, is a short walk away. Venice is a long way off (well over an hour by road or by bus and ferry via Pellestrina and the Lido), so use your cruise line's transfer if you want to see Venice.
